Jiddu Krishnamurti, on Diary Writing as a means to Self Realization
Jiddu Krishnamurti, on Diary Writing, as a means to Self Realization

Questioner: I have been writing down [my thoughts] as you suggested. I find that I cannot get beyond the trivial thoughts. Is it because the conscious mind refuses to acknowledge the subconscious cravings and demands, and so escapes into an empty blockade?
Krishnamurti: I suggested that to slow down the mind in order to examine the thought-feeling process, you should write down every thought-feeling. If one wishes to understand, for example, a machine of high revolution one has to slow it down, not stop it for then it becomes merely a dead matter; but make it turn gently, slowly, to study its structure, its movement. Likewise if we wish to understand our mind, we must slow down our thinking - not put a stop to it - slow it down in order to study it, to follow it to its fullest extent. And to do this I suggested that you should write down every thought-feeling. It is not possible to write down every thought and feeling for there are too many of them, but if you attempted to write a little every day you would soon begin to know yourself; you would begin to be aware of the many layers of your consciousness, of their inter-relation and inter-response. This awareness is difficult but if you would go far you must begin near.
Now, the questioner finds his thoughts are trivial and that he cannot get beyond them. He wants to know if this triviality is the result of an escape from the deeper cravings and demands. Partly it is and also our thoughts and feelings are in themselves petty, trivial, small. The root of understanding lies through the small, the trivial. Without understanding the small, thought-feeling cannot go beyond itself. You must become aware of your trivialities, your narrowness, your prejudices to understand them, and you can understand only when there is humility, when there is neither judgment nor comparison, acceptance nor denial. Thus there is the beginning of wisdom. Most of our thought-feeling is trivial. Why not recognize and understand its cause: the self, the result of vast and petty ignorance? Just as in following a thin vein you may come upon riches so if you follow, think out, feel out the trivial you will discover deep treasures. The small may hide the deep but you must follow it. The trivial if you study it gives promise of something beyond. Do not brush it aside but become aware of every thought-feeling for it has a significance.
The blockages may occur either because the conscious mind does not want to respond to deeper demands, which may necessitate a different course of action and so bring about trouble and pain, or it is incapable of wider and deeper thought-feeling. If it is the lack of capacity, you can create it only through persistent and constant awareness, through searching, observing, studying.
I only suggested writing down every thought-feeling as a means of cultivating this comprehensive, extensional awareness which is not the concentration of exclusion, not the concentration of self-enclosing isolation. This extensional awareness comes through understanding, not through mere judgment or comparison, denial or acceptance.
Jon Kary Compendium on - Medittion & Consciousness being
It is not chaos for which we should reserve our greatest fear. But order, or freedom, which is founded upon an avoidance of it.
For, those who seek to escape from chaos- and its companions in discomfort and unpredictability- ultimately only escape from the essential aspect of self and potential for growth which chaos holds enfolded.
There is a Suffering which results from Authenticity residing too long in the Womb; a Suffering of stagnancy which can only be cured through the Surrender to the Birth of the Spirit through the Passage of the Self.
The Spiritual Death is most Present, yet least Realized, where self and life are most assumed to be secure.
Spiritual Enlightenment is the Realization of the Intimate and Transformative Pure Being of Consciousness as Oneself.
Altered States of Consciousness are often conflated with This Ideal, or regarded as effective or uniquely valuable entrances to It.
Unfortunately, this interpretive posture only further obscures and distracts from the Liberation of Being, and overshadows the actual value of such states as transitory tools to radically unveil the limited and artificial nature of ordinary conditioned Consciousness by thrusting it to its point of extremity.
Insanity occurs when a person has their connection to Narrative Quality distorted or taken away by an 'unknown Other' who is out of range of Perceptual Access; and which is, in actuality, a dissociated element or complex of themselves externalized through a reactive and radical process of defensive self-alienation.
In Enlightenment, a Unitive Will and Integral Self Transcendentally Surrenders all narration to Enter the Emptiness from which all Quality Arises in order to Consummate Being with and As Grace.
The Holy Sphere is Enlightened when One Transforms the Energy and Transcends the Form:
The Essence Breathes in the Womb of the Presence-
thus Perfected Being is Born.
We must be careful not to confuse passivity and Peace.
Passivity is a state of stagnancy which formulates as a defense against the Domain of Discrimination.
While Peace employs the Energy of Discrimination in order to Effect a Greater Manifestation of Transformation- and ultimately, Harmony.
Awakening is a Singular and Unique Aim:
Its Process and Apprehension are Non-Dual.
So, there is Accomplishment; but, every Moment of Authentic Practice is also the Sanctified Whole.
Emptiness refers to 'both' the Connecting and Unified Medium of Inter-Being, which Exists as That out of which All things Arise, and Within which All things Transpire; and is the Interior 'Thusness' which Enlightens as Awareness.
The Condition of Not-Knowing is the Fundamental Gesture of Inception made by the Authentic Self in the Mode of Emptiness which Invites Grace to Consummate the Sacred Intimacies of Perception and Comprehension as This Very Being.
Stillness and Silence are the Fundamental Qualities of the Pure Being of Consciousness, the Intimacy Which renders the turbulence, commotion, and disturbance of the personal relation in the manifest into the Momentum of Realization to the Aim of Holy Peace.
External conditions of stillness and silence can be useful as contexts in which the Pure State of Consciousness can Be Realized, as such contexts are symbols of the Essential Interior Principle.
This is why Meditation Is the Fundamental Practice:
Because It Is the Pure State of Consciousness made manifest as Experience. However, there is a distinction to be made between the external echoes and the Interior Reality.
Ultimately, Meditation As the Intimacy With Stillness and Silence are Intended to Flow Into the Activity of Life.
Like a Great Tree: The Root Is Grounded, while the Foliage Dances with Sacred Activity and Flowering Grace.
When Consciousness is Liberated, Authenticity Rises to the Surface of Being of Its own Nature; then, the Way of Life Becomes Radiant and Clear.
The Common Thread substantive to the Eastern and Western Modalities, suggestive of the Universal Truth Essential to the Forms of Spiritual Regard, and typified in the Narratives and Methodologies of Zen and Christianity, is represented in their Complimentary emphasis upon the Mutual Aspects of the Whole.
In the Case of Zen, this emphasis alights upon the Emptiness of ABSOLUTE as Consciousness.
And, in the Case of Christianity, the emphasis alights upon the Presence of ABSOLUTE as Grace.
The Consummation of the Whole of Spirit is a Marriage between the Emptiness of ABSOLUTE as Consciousness and the Presence of ABSOLUTE as Grace-
In Meditation, One Opens the Space;
In Liberation, Grace Enlightens.
Necessity is necessary but not necessarily sufficient for Reality. Modalities and Methodologies evolve together with the systems in which they operate. Sophistication of form and breadth of potential shadow are correlative.
Perceptual shading and existential orientations are always present. Truth is spectral in Nature: It opens in phases- but does so to the degree that one appropriately aligns one's Being to the Radiant Field characteristic to the quality or kind of Truth Intended to be Perceived, and the particular angle of aspect desired of Apprehension.
Since 'Knowledge is a function of Being,' one will only Detect and Discern the Fundamental and Transformative material occupying the Shadow to the Depth that they Enter In to Its Interior Fold, while Exemplifying the Contemplative Patience which allows the Eye of Insight to Adjust to the Mystery of the Present Darkness.
Transformation is an Interior Phenomenon. And those who actually benefit the most from externalized modes of power and control have the most to lose by 'leaving room' for such Interior Developments, and the Revelations of Authenticity and Autonomy which are their Natural Effects.
So, the distractive external forms are formulated and reinforced.
On the individual level, people permit, facilitate, and enable such externalized forms and systems because Interior Modes of Transformation represent the Greatest Challenges of Life: That of Overcoming, or Healing and Transcending, one's Deep Discomfort with Transience, and the reflex of identity into which one pours their primary Energy of Being as a protection against it.
As the schizogenic 'dominance through chaos' methodology becomes more firmly entrenched and intensified, those already habitually receptive- i.e. reflexively identified with- to the 'validating narratives' which facilitate it will only tend towards a greater investment in their commitment to complicity.
The resulting momentum could likely cause an increasing margin of dissociation between those whose submission to the manufactured need to conform to the standards and practices of 'functional disturbance' has been internalized, and those who persist in their refusal to serve the compulsion to hide the growing 'echo of hollowness.'
Brain and Body are the physical correlates and translators of Mind; Mind is the concentrated representation of Soul- which is the Reservoir of Wisdom, Virtue, Purpose, Significance, and Meaning- which is also the most Subtle Essence of Being which still preserves a trace of personal identity- this is the Seed-Form of our Being; and Spirit is at once the Fundamental Presence of Awareness within which all of these Phases of Being and all forms Arise, as well as the highest or Deepest Existential Attainment, the Origin of Authenticity, and the Ground from which It is Come to Be Expressed in Truth and Form.
One of the greatest, most pervasive, and potentially most dangerous fallacies present in modern spiritual thought is that the root of the problematic nature of the dominant personal and socio-cultural structures is founded in the object and entity of an ego which has grown too large or obtained too secure a purchase in the Ground of Being.
Inevitably, what follows is a recommendation, or even an insistence, that the fundamental work is founded in the effort or intention to negate or 'let go of' the ego as the Initiation into Liberation.
However, what this view possesses in Openness, it lacks in Wisdom, and is facilitated by a lack of Discernment and Discrimination between the libertine elation and 'ecstasy-by-default' associated with the release from any structure and the dropping of any weight, and the Authentic Liberation of Pure Being which Evolves Structure through the Grace of Dynamic Quality, while maintaining the Sacred Connection with Stillness and Silence.
All of the both frantic and subtle struggles and operations which result from the personal and socio-cultural structures and systems of this world arise not from an egoity grown too large, or one established securely, but as an inevitable consequence of an egoic energy stuck in a self-perpetuating cycle of fragmented immaturity, which only intensifies- even as it grows in its skills of concealment- in reaction to all gestures of negation- whether subtle or overt.
The Ego is Spirit in adolescence; and It must be made Whole before Transcendent Being is possible.
Awakening is impossible as long as one's investment in obligation and the dependence upon the fulfillment of desire take precedence over the Commitment to Authenticity.
Meditation is Consciousness Being (It)Self;
Enlightenment is Being Becoming Being-as-Consciousness.
Seeking for Unity (ABSOLUTE) is the most effective means to embodying dis-unity, which is precisely why such Seeking represents the best Practice in Preparation for the Fall Into the Sacred and Singular Enlightenment of Grace.
The Radical Awareness of Essential Unity and the Deep Determination of Discriminating Insight are not mutually exclusive, but are Intimates Within ABSOLUTE which Temper and Challenge one another to the Service of a Divine Perception.
The Yielding of the Will to the Presence of Other is a Type for the Surrender of Being to the Truth of Other-as-Oneself.
Will Itself is the contracted Force of Destiny; as the Self is the Distant Echo of Grace.
The Essential Mystical Narrative is that the personal self and the world upon which it operates are dissociative illusions superimposed upon Authentic Reality, thereby resulting in the 'distance of suffering.'
The Cure for this Condition resides in the Intimacy of Identification As the Transcendent Unity of Original Being- the Dissolution of the Essence of Consciousness Into the Presence of Grace as the Divine Gesture of ABSOLUTE.
In Ancient Times, This Narrative was encoded Mythographically, only Revealed Progressively to those Initiated into the Context of the Interpretive Regime.
When Jesus came, he exposed This Narrative and Translated It into the Common. In reaction, those who had accrued power and privilege through the Mythographic Institution sought to re-privatize the Narrative by re-translating Jesus from the Exemplar of God-as-Self, to the exclusivity of God-as-person.
Our Souls are Radiances of the One Light of the Heart of Grace whose Pulsations of Thusness are Focused Through Reflective Aspects of Its Glory-
In Authenticity we Become the Countenance of God;
In Consciousness, we Are the Way.
Traditional Meditation Practice facilitates the Establishment of the Being and Form of Enlightenment;
while Authentic Expression through the Art of Living represents Its Mode of Becoming.
Spiritual Perception Opens as the Eye of Subtlety: the Ability to Recognize Greater and Greater Beauties, and Deeper and Deeper Truths, in the 'smaller' and the 'simpler' things:
The Glory of Beauty Revealed to the Mystery of Consciousness Through the Presence of Grace.
Life is the Art of Liberated Realization facilitated through an Authentic Archaeology of Being whose Potent and Open Exercise Self-Actualizes as the ecstatic reflex of boundary negation and the anesthetic addiction of existential surrogacy are both Overcome.
There Is a Singular Presence- which Forms the Essence of Consciousness and Radiates the Quality of Beauty, Destiny, and Love- which Ceaselessly Calls in the Heart-Space of Being, and Whose Eternal Voice is Perceived through the Sacred Postures of Stillness and Silence, for our Soul to Gesture in Holy Surrender and Fall Into the Ocean of Its Grace.
The true Dark Age is Interiorly-defined as founded upon the fundamental repression wherein the occupying entity of Being not only forgets the Soul of Consciousness, but forgets that it has forgotten; a being fully objectified to itself, whose wisdom is an artifice, whose virtue is a sham, all veils to hide the Self-in-Secret, for which it desperately and blindly searches in vain.
