No Death NO God ?

From an unbeliever's point of view, it could be argued that the sum of all religion arises from the realisation of the inevitability of death and our fear of it. That, since like all animals we're also governed by evolutionary forces which instinctively makes us abhor absolute destruction, we create scenarios that take the edge off such an annihilation event - even if it lies way in the future.

From this perspective, therefore, it's easy to see why people have variously visualised things like immortal souls, life after death, heaven and hell, karmic reincarnation, etc - and of course, a purpose behind it all which is usually enshrined in the being and substance of a Creator.

Yet, even as we speak some very serious science is beginning to envisage another kind of scenario where human longevity is not only prolonged to unimagined lengths but the concept of death itself is abolished. In fact in The Age of Spiritual Machines, futurist Ray Kurzweil has even suggested that the coming generation could be the last one experiencing terminal death. Would immortality render faith meaningless?

If such a thing were to happen, it would be one the greatest revolutions of the mind that human beings have had. A complex and collective experience that has been part of our lives since the dawn of consciousness and which effectively makes us different from animals might suddenly have no reason to endure any longer. The real test of our humanity then would be to see if morality still persists in the absence of a godhead.

Mick Quinn Uncommon Path quotes

"Your interest in awakening is a precious commodity. Protect and nurture it because curiosity can easily transmute to cynicism. Shield it from the voices of the skeptics."

"Your words either support or degrade the conditions for awakened living."

"Awakened love is to care about the spiritual development of another person more than you care about any other aspect of the relationship itself."

"The ego wants you to believe that you are a fully engaged spiritual seeker."

"The ability to be Present is dependent on being mindful about the content of your mind. Such mental activity simply does not matter yo your awakening."

"Many lives are like karmic wave pools, where people spend the majority of their times repairing the painful repercussions of their inherited intentions while making more at the same time."

Mukul Sharma page on ' Speaking Tree'.

Mr.Mukul Sharma, apart from writing wonderful articles, is also a regular contributor ( and, shall we call, ' voracious writer' ? Or ' copious writer' ? ) to ' Speaking Tree' from Time of India.

I read a couple of his articles which had great depth.

Mr.Mukul Sharma Page on Speaking Tree is ' here'.
